Trace Email

Any email message has a return address on it that is used to show the trace of where the email originated. When used, a person can accurately trace email back and know who sent what. The header shows all of the information that is required for this purpose. Your email program on your computer will display this to you through “full headers.” It even shows the time that the message was composed. You have to know how to see that information though. This is how you do that.

Outlook

If you use Outlook to email people, then you can navigate over to the tab that reads “details.” It will open when you click on it. Then look at the information that reads “received from.” That shows all you need to know. Jot down the IP in the received from section. You will need this later. Note the IP that is a series of numbers that has dots in it. You can also note the time sent and the name of the person sending it if they have that filled in on their computer.

Yahoo

If you use Yahoo for your email client then follow these steps. Open the email message, at the top click on “full headers.” This will display the same information. Again, look for the “received from” information. Jot that down.

Hotmail

When Hotmail is used, you can right click on the email message list and get the same information. Depending on your mouse, you might also see view source when you right click. It depends on what type of computer that you are using. The basic steps are the same though.

Gmail

Open your email message in your inbox section in your Gmail account. At this point you can click on “show details” in the header of the line of the message. The header is the part that is at the top of the email. Then click on “show original” in the list that shows up. Note the IP and any other pertinent information that you need.

AOL

If you are actually still using the dinosaur known as “AOL”, then you can find this information in this manner. This one is a bit more complicated. You must go through the online site to see the headers. When you see it simply right click in the inbox message on it and look for “view message source.”

In this manner, any person can easily trace email from the sender.

Once the email sender’s IP is found go to IP Checking to begin a search and gather the information that you need to catch the offender that is spamming or harassing your inbox. You can also take that information and give it to law enforcement.

You can get the location of the email source and in some cases, you can even locate the person home address and telephone number.

Either of these two methods can be used to trace the offender to a home address. It is not difficult to reverse email if you know how to do it. Some people are more elusive, but the average person does not use those techniques when emailing. That means that anyone can find that person that is spamming or harassing you online. All you have to do is trace email with one of these two methods to find them.
